In 90 degree Houston heat, 2000 strong, men, women and children assembled in front of Israeli consulate on July 12, 2104 holding posters, chanting slogans, singing songs to express their pain and support for the children dying in Gaza everyday. They came from all walks of life to protest against the nonsensical Israeli attacks on civilian population of Gaza. They were Palestinian, Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Black, White, Hispanic, Muslims and Christians. People who believed in supporting the oppressed and opposing the oppressor.
The insane Israeli bombardment has continued all night and all day, every day and everywhere, coming from the sea, from the air and from land-based artillery. The naval bombardment is pouring its lava, targeting the coast of Gaza City and further north. The numbers of killed and injured continue to rise. And the world media completely underplays this genocide.
A study by ‘If Americans Knew’ found that the Associated Press Newswire (AP) coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict significantly distorts reality, essentially over-reporting the number of Israelis killed in the conflict and underreporting the number of Palestinians killed. The study found that AP reported on Israeli children’s deaths more often than the deaths occurred, but failed to cover 85 percent of Palestinian children killed. A few years ago, they found that The New York Times was seven times more likely to comment on an Israeli child’s death than that of a Palestinian.
Dr Mona Qasim Alfarra, who directs a hospital in the Gaza Strip writes, “So, I can only say to the people of Gaza: as the morning approaches, make sure to embrace and hug your children and loved ones and tell them how much you love them. The dawn is bound to come.”
Long live the supporters of the oppressed everywhere. Long live goodness. Long live morality. The next demonstration in support on Palestine is on ‘Quds Day’ is on July 25, 2014.
