The premium SUV segment in India is getting bigger, with Mahindra planning to enter it before the end of this year. Premium SUVs offer a great mix of ruggedness, space, power, refinement and luxury, and are often the vehicles of choice for India’s growing rich. But the segment is dominated by players from outside India.
The Ford Endeavour, Chevrolet Trailblazer, Hyundai Santa Fe and Toyota Fortuner currently lead the class. Two of them are from American automakers, and the other two are from South Korea and Japan. Mahindra will be the first Indian automaker making its presence felt, and it plans to localise the production of its entry to the highest possible extent.
So what will be Mahindra’s offering for the premium SUV mix? The company has built a strong reputation for itself in the larger Indian SUV space with its XUV500, TUV300, NuvoSport and, of course, the Mahindra Thar, Bolero and Scorpio. They are all popular choices in their segments, and Mahindra has proven itself to be a company that produce well-built, quality and high-performance SUVs.
In the premium segment, its offering is going to be the next-generation Rexton, designed as the production model of the SsangYong LIV-2 concept seen at the 2016 Paris auto show. Also Read: Top 5 Premium SUVs on sale in India for 2016
